Markets do not panic because a company is spending money. They panic when the spending outpaces any credible story about how it gets paid back. SpaceX gave Wall Street both problems simultaneously on Tuesday night, and the stock is paying for it Wednesday morning.
The headline read like a victory: revenue of $7.81 billion, up 92% year-over-year, beating the $6.9 billion consensus estimate by roughly $900 million. The per-share loss came in at nine cents against a twenty-six-cent forecast. The net loss was $541 million. Every segment beat.
None of it mattered. SPCX fell as much as about 8% after hours Tuesday, and the reason is not the income statement. It is the capital allocation table.
The Only Number That Moved the Stock
Capital expenditures in Q2 totaled about $18 billion, a more-than-sixfold jump from less than $3 billion a year earlier. Of that figure, $15.8 billion went to AI infrastructure, according to reporting on the company’s quarter. The average analyst estimate, per Visible Alpha expectations cited in coverage, was around $13.1 billion. The gap is what the market reacted to.
The trajectory is the more unsettling data point. The company’s filing shows Starlink ARPU falling to $66 per month from $86 a year earlier, and the quarter reinforced that the cash engine is connectivity while the incremental capital is being pulled toward AI. As Melissa Otto, head of Visible Alpha research at S&P Global, framed it in coverage, the market is increasingly concerned AI infrastructure investments may not generate returns in line with the cash required. The company also did not provide detailed forward capex guidance for the rest of the year. Investors are being asked to fund a capital sprint with no disclosed finish line.
Inside the Three-Segment Structure
SpaceX reports three business lines, and understanding the internal transfer of resources is the only way to understand the investment question.
Connectivity (Starlink): Revenue of $4.29 billion, up 66% year-over-year. Operating profit of about $1.66 billion. This is the only profitable segment. It is, to be precise, the only thing keeping SpaceX’s consolidated financials from being a pure cash incinerator. Starlink subscriber count reached 12 million in Q2, doubling from a year earlier. That growth is real.
The compression, however, is also real. Average revenue per Starlink subscriber was $66 per month, down from $86 a year ago, as SpaceX expanded into lower-income international markets and introduced cheaper plans. Space (launch, Starship R&D): Revenue of $962 million, up 29% year-over-year.
The internal structure, stated plainly: Starlink’s operating profit is subsidizing losses elsewhere, while roughly $18 billion in capex burns through cash from the IPO raise and the company’s existing liquidity. What Management Said and Why It Did Not Land
Executives were direct in addressing the concern. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen said the company is on pace to reach $100 billion in annualized recurring revenue by the end of 2026. The message did not resonate. The reason is mathematical. A $100 billion ARR run-rate exiting December implies roughly $25 billion in Q4 annualized revenue across three segments. That would require Starlink, AI cloud, and Space to collectively more than triple the $7.81 billion posted in Q2, in two quarters. Even if it is achievable, the capex required to get there has not been disclosed. Investors are being asked to underwrite a spending program whose scale has already surprised.

The August 6 Variable
The capex shock is not the only pressure vector active right now. On August 6, two trading days after earnings, 911.5 million insider shares become eligible for sale, the first tranche in SpaceX’s staggered lock-up expiration schedule.
The lock-up structure is staggered rather than cliff-based. August 6 releases about 20% of eligible insider shares. An additional 10% is tied to a price trigger requiring SPCX to trade at least 30% above the $135 IPO price, meaning above $175.50, for five of ten consecutive trading days. That trigger was not met. The stock sat below the $135 IPO price at Tuesday’s close of $125.33.
