Adidas Just Had Its Best Quarter Ever. Read the Fine Print.

Hey there, bargain hunter. Adidas just posted record preliminary Q3 results and raised full-year guidance. Before you chase the stock, let’s do the math that the headline number obscures.

Don’t sell your shares to him on Friday afternoon…

Every Friday afternoon like clockwork, a legendary trader scoops up shares knowing after-hours breaking news will have traders desperate on Monday morning to buy back from him for 5X… 10X… or even 100X what they sold for.

All the while he gets to collect as much as $9,518 OR MORE just for holding shares over the weekend.

Scoreboard

Revenue hit a record €7.25 billion in Q3, up 9%, while gross margin climbed 2.5 percentage points to 54.3%, and operating profit rose 37% to about €1.01 billion, a record quarterly operating profit for the company.

What Actually Happened

That 37% operating profit jump has a €200 million asterisk attached.

During the quarter, Adidas said it received the majority of its U.S. tariff claims, recording a tariff refund of around €200 million that contributed to the gross margin improvement. Strip it out and operating profit was about €808 million. That is still well ahead of the €736 million Adidas made in Q3 2025, but the underlying gain is much smaller than the headline 37%.

A one-time government refund is not a revenue line. It is a cash event. Model it that way.

The Business Behind the Numbers

Adidas designs, markets, and licenses sportswear globally. It takes margins on branded product, keeps manufacturing largely outsourced, and competes with Nike (NKE) and Puma (PUM.DE) for shelf space and cultural relevance. The model works when full-price sell-through is high and inventory is clean.

CEO Bjorn Gulden credited marketing and innovation, pointing to strong and profitable growth in football, running, and training. He also flagged that the footwear lifestyle business remains challenging amid elevated inventory and discounting in the market, which he expects to normalize. That caveat matters: lifestyle sneakers carry fat margins, and pressure there limits how much operational improvement the company can actually show in Q4.

The Guidance Math

  • Adidas started from its previous outlook of around €2.3 billion, then added around €100 million from more profitable growth and around €200 million from the tariff refund, putting it on course for €2.6 billion.
  • In light of the strong profitability development, Adidas decided to reinvest around €100 million in Q4 into initiatives enabling greater operating leverage in the future.
  • As a result, Adidas now projects full-year operating profit to increase to a level of around €2.5 billion in 2026, versus the prior target of around €2.3 billion.

So the organic upgrade, excluding the tariff refund, is €100 million. The rest is a receipt tied to the U.S. tariff refund process.

Is It Cheap?

The average analyst estimate for full-year operating profit was €2.4 billion, according to Bloomberg, meaning guidance at €2.5 billion clears the bar, but not by a country mile once the one-time item is isolated. Citigroup’s Monique Pollard raised her price target to €211 and flagged the potential for an additional ~€200 million in tariff refunds in Q4, while RBC Capital Markets and JPMorgan each reaffirmed their Buy-equivalent ratings. A potential second refund wave is the market’s real working thesis here.

Bull / Base / Bear

  • Bull: A second tranche of tariff refunds lands in Q4, full-price sell-through accelerates into year-end, and Adidas exits 2026 above €2.6 billion in operating profit with clean inventory.
  • Base: The €100 million organic improvement sticks, the Q4 reinvestment pays off in 2027 leverage, and ADS.DE trades in line with revised consensus.
  • Bear: No further tariff refund materializes, the lifestyle footwear glut worsens heading into holiday season, and currency headwinds eat into Q4 margin. The guidance midpoint looks full priced without the one-timer.

Action Plan

Do not buy the headline. Buy the underlying business, if the price warrants it. Full Q3 results are due October 29, 2026, which is where the category breakdown and currency-by-region detail will tell a more complete story. That is the real entry decision point. If you already hold ADS.DE, hold through the full results release. If you are sizing a new position, keep it half-weight until October 29 confirms whether the organic momentum is real or tariff-aided.

Cheap Investor Checklist

  • Organic operating profit, ex-tariff refund: target above €850m in Q3 standalone
  • Full-price sell-through trend: improving or holding flat?
  • Lifestyle footwear inventory: is it clearing or building?
  • Q4 tariff refund: does a second ~€200m tranche arrive or not?
  • Currency drag: watch EUR/USD through year-end
  • Q4 reinvestment payback: does Gulden’s leverage thesis show up in 2027 margin guidance?
  • Peer check: how does Nike’s next results release compare on full-price momentum?

Bottom Line

If the organic business can sustain €800 million-plus quarterly operating profit without tariff windfalls, Adidas is genuinely re-rating. If Q4 disappoints and no second refund materializes, the guidance raise looks like a one-quarter accounting event dressed up as a trend. Wait for October 29, 2026 before deciding which version you own.
