A note from our friends at Weiss Ratings(ad)

Dear Reader,

Within the next several months, the federal government is set to implement a significant policy change affecting bank accounts nationwide.

The proposed framework would expand regulatory visibility into account activity and, under certain conditions, allow for account restrictions.

That includes monitoring of individual transactions.

And in specific scenarios, temporary holds on funds.

There are 4 steps worth reviewing now to assess how your savings are positioned ahead of this shift.

Review the 4 steps here.

Good luck and God bless!

Jack Daniel’s Owner Just Reported. What Bargain Hunters Need.

Hey there, bargain hunter. Brown-Forman dropped its first quarter of fiscal year 2027 before the bell this morning, kicking off what management has already told you will be a rough year. The question on the desk: does a de-rated dividend payer with the world’s best-selling American whiskey finally deserve a look, or is the cheap price just a cheap price?

Scoreboard

Before we get to today’s release, here is the baseline you are walking in with. Full-year fiscal 2026 revenue came in at $3.93 billion, down 1.2%. Net income fell 18% to $715 million. Diluted EPS landed at $1.53, down from $1.84 the prior year and a 12% miss versus analyst estimates. Management guided fiscal 2027 for flat organic net sales and a 3% to 5% decline in organic operating income. That is the scorecard Q1 FY27 needs to be measured against.

The Real Reason This Is Hard

The spirits industry is not having a bad quarter. It is having a bad cycle. Core US spirits depletions fell 4.19% for the twelve months through March 2026. American whiskey revenue slipped 0.9% to $5.1 billion in calendar 2025. A record-low 54% of US adults say they drink at all, down from 62% three years ago. That is a structural headwind, not a hangover.

Tariffs compound it. American booze was pulled from Canadian shelves and remains restricted across most of Canada. Brown-Forman generated 58% of fiscal 2026 net sales internationally, with meaningful exposure to Mexico and developed European markets, both of which carry live trade friction risk. Tariff threats targeting American spirits exports have already compressed operating income.

What the Business Actually Is

Brown-Forman sells more than 40 spirit and RTD cocktail brands in over 170 countries. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is the number-one selling American whiskey in the world and the primary revenue driver. Woodford Reserve is the premium growth vehicle. The RTD portfolio, led by New Mix in Mexico, has been a rare bright spot, with New Mix net sales up 41% in fiscal 2026. The US accounted for 42% of net sales in fiscal 2026.

Data That Matters

  • FY26 revenue: $3.93B (-1.2% year over year)
  • FY26 net income: $715M (-18%)
  • FY26 EPS: $1.53 vs. $1.84 prior year
  • FY26 operating margin: 25.5%, down from 27.9% the year before
  • Q4 FY26 operating margin: 10.5%, hit by $132M in noncash brand impairments on Gin Mare ($45M) and Diplomático ($87M)
  • FCF payout ratio: Reached approximately 97% at last check, with dividend coverage tightening to 1.03x
  • FY27 guidance: Flat organic sales, organic operating income down 3-5%
  • Dividend: 42 consecutive years of increases; quarterly rate $0.231 per share
  • Restructuring: Cooperage closure saves $70-80M annually

Is It Cheap?

BFB traded near $26 heading into this morning’s report, against a 52-week range of roughly $22.61 to $31.92. Sazerac thought the business was worth $32 a share in cash, a 23% premium to where shares sat when the offer was last made. The Brown family said no. Twice. That $32 offer also implies Sazerac valued the combined upside above current market prices, which is a useful data point even if the deal is dead.

Sixteen analysts carry a consensus Hold with an average price target near $28. The bull case sits at $37; the bear at $20. With EPS of $1.53 in FY26 and guidance pointing to further pressure, you are paying roughly 17x depressed earnings for a business that threw off enough cash to fund $427 million in dividends last year. That is not obviously cheap. It is not obviously expensive either, which is exactly the problem.

Bull / Base / Bear

Bull: Jack Daniel’s volumes stabilize in Q1 FY27. Tariff noise settles. The restructuring savings hit the income statement. American whiskey conditions begin to improve heading into 2027, as SipSource forecasts. A new CEO energizes the strategy without breaking the dividend.

Base: Flat organic sales hold. Operating income falls the guided 3-5%. The dividend stays intact but barely. Shares grind sideways, range-bound between $22 and $30, until volume trends give investors a reason to rerate.

Bear: Jack Daniel’s volumes deteriorate further in Q1. Canada remains closed. A trade escalation hits European markets. FCF coverage drops below 1x, forcing a dividend review. The stock revisits its 52-week low.

Action Plan

Do not chase this on a green open. The Q1 report is out, but the call at 10am ET is where management will speak to volume trends directly. Listen for organic Jack Daniel’s depletion data and any commentary on tariff exposure heading into fiscal 2027. If volumes are flat to slightly positive and FCF coverage holds above 1x, a small starter position is defensible for patient income investors. Scale in on weakness toward $22-23 if the market punishes an in-line release. Set a hard review trigger if the dividend payout ratio exceeds 105% of free cash flow.

Cheap Investor Checklist

  • Jack Daniel’s organic depletion trend: flat or better?
  • US net sales direction versus Q1 FY26 (-8% reported baseline)
  • FCF payout ratio: holding below 100%?
  • Tariff commentary: Canada and European exposure update
  • New CEO search: timeline disclosed?
  • RTD net sales growth: continuing double-digit pace?
  • Organic operating income: tracking within guided 3-5% decline range?
  • Guidance reaffirmed or cut?

Bottom Line

If Q1 FY27 shows Jack Daniel’s volumes stabilizing and the dividend cushion holding, Brown-Forman earns a measured first look at current prices. If volumes slide again and management trims guidance, the stock is a wait. This is a 155-year-old brand franchise trading near multi-year lows because the cycle is genuinely tough. The cycle will eventually turn. The question is whether the balance sheet and the dividend survive until it does.
