Bonus Content: AbbVie Already Told You About the $216M Charge. Now Check If the Dividend Is Safe.
Dear Reader,
After so many years in Washington, I thought I was immune to being shocked by what our government could do.
But the actions taking place in D.C. right now have gone FAR beyond anything I could have imagined.
And if you’re not careful, YOU could pay the price.
You’re already seeing it at the grocery story… and when you pump gas…
However, this is all just a foreshadowing of an even greater crisis.
Most Americans will be completely blindsided by what’s about to happen.
So please make sure you, your family, and anyone you care about are prepared.
I explain what I believe is coming… and the #1 first step every American should take to prepare right now – in this new short interview.
You can watch the full thing right here.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ron Paul

AbbVie Already Told You About the $216M Charge. Now Check If the Dividend Is Safe.
Hey there, bargain hunter. AbbVie walked into its Q3 earnings cycle having already done something unusual: it filed an 8-K on October 5, 2026 telling you exactly what the damage would be before results even landed. In that SEC filing, the company disclosed that third-quarter acquired IPR&D and milestone expense would total $216 million on a pre-tax basis, shaving $0.11 per share from both GAAP and adjusted EPS. So the headline number was never $3.84-$3.88. It was always going to land lower.
Scoreboard
In that same October 5, 2026 filing, AbbVie put its Q3 adjusted diluted EPS guidance, including the IPR&D hit, at $3.73-$3.77.
On the revenue side, AbbVie pointed to roughly $17.2 billion in Q3 revenue. The point here is not whether the quarter comes in a hair above or below any single consensus snapshot. The point is that the pre-disclosed IPR&D charge was already baked into what management wanted you to focus on: the underlying run-rate and the full-year guide.
For context, AbbVie’s Q3 2025 adjusted EPS was $1.86, so the year-over-year comparison is still very easy.
The Real Reason the Charge Matters Less Than It Looks
AbbVie has made a habit of pre-flagging acquired IPR&D and milestones expense when deal timing makes it determinable ahead of results. In Q2 2026, the company reported an unfavorable impact of $0.17 per share related to acquired IPR&D and milestones expense, per its quarterly release. This quarter’s $0.11 hit is smaller than Q2’s.
The question bargain hunters should be asking is not whether the IPR&D charge is annoying. It is whether the underlying business generates enough cash to sustain a $6.92 annual dividend.
Deep Dive: How AbbVie Makes Money Now
Humira is largely gone. That is old news. What replaced it is genuinely impressive. In Q2 2026, Skyrizi generated $5.505 billion globally (up 24.4% reported), and Rinvoq added $2.525 billion (up 24.5% reported), per AbbVie’s Q2 2026 earnings release. Together, that is about $8.03 billion in a single quarter.
And yes, that is the center of gravity now. In the first half of 2026, Skyrizi plus Rinvoq revenue was far larger than Humira’s, based on AbbVie’s SEC filing breakdown of worldwide net revenues.
Neuroscience, anchored by Botox Therapeutic and Vraylar, adds a second growth leg that most income investors underestimate.
AbbVie is not the only healthcare name where the market is discounting a durable recurring revenue engine. Intuitive Surgical’s installed base generates 85% recurring revenue yet the stock sits 37% off its high.
Data Section
- Q2 revenue: $16.99 billion, up 10.2% reported, 9.5% operational (company release).
- Q2 adjusted EPS: $3.65, a 22.9% increase year over year (company release).
- Gross margin: In Q2 2026, AbbVie’s non-GAAP gross margin was 72.3% (company presentation).
- FY2026 revenue guide: About $67.6 billion, as of the company’s Q2 2026 update.
- Dividend: $6.92 per share annualized (company dividend announcement and market data).
- Yield: Roughly 2.4% at late-October 2026 prices (market data varies by day).
Is the Dividend Safe?
On a GAAP basis, the payout ratio can look alarming because acquired IPR&D charges can compress reported net income in lumpy ways. On cash flow, the picture is different.
In its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q, AbbVie reported cash dividend payments of about $6.2 billion for the first six months of 2026.
With Skyrizi and Rinvoq running at roughly $8.0 billion per quarter in Q2 and non-GAAP gross margin around 72%, the operating cash engine is large enough to fund the dividend and still invest in the business. The bigger swing factor is capital allocation: how much debt, how many acquisitions, and how much incremental IPR&D spend comes along for the ride.
Also worth remembering: on September 10, 2026, AbbVie declared a quarterly dividend of $1.73 per share, payable November 16, 2026. That implies the current $6.92 annualized run-rate.
Bull / Base / Bear
Bull: Skyrizi and Rinvoq sustain 20%-plus growth through new indications. If AbbVie’s late-stage pipeline reads out cleanly and regulators cooperate, Rinvoq could widen its addressable market and extend the growth runway. Guidance rises again.
Base: Growth moderates but stays healthy, and the dividend keeps stepping higher at a mid-single-digit pace. Acquired IPR&D charges continue, but the payout holds because cash generation stays strong.
Bear: A competitive psoriasis or IBD entrant erodes Skyrizi pricing, or safety and labeling dynamics limit Rinvoq expansion. In that world, the dividend is not “broken” overnight, but the margin of safety narrows if AbbVie keeps layering on deal-driven costs and debt.
The bear case for AbbVie rhymes with a pattern visible elsewhere in dividend-paying industrials. 3M’s dividend is rebuilding after a liability-driven reset, showing how contingent costs can compress a payout before operations actually break.
Action Plan
If AbbVie’s full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance, including the $216 million acquired IPR&D and milestones expense, stays inside the $13.76-$13.96 range it laid out on October 5, 2026 and the immunology growth engine keeps humming, the dividend looks covered.
Scale in on weakness if the market fixates on the charge while the underlying product trends remain intact. Trim if Rinvoq growth decelerates meaningfully or if management signals incremental IPR&D drag beyond Q3 without a corresponding improvement in the growth outlook.
Cheap Investor Scorecard
- Skyrizi quarterly revenue trend: track every quarter
- Rinvoq quarterly revenue trend
- Full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance midpoint: watch whether it holds above $13.86
- Non-GAAP gross margin: hold above 70%
- Dividend declared (and any increase cadence)
- IPR&D charges in Q4 guidance: disclosed or excluded?
- Apogee dilution: contained to $0.14 or widening?
- Neuroscience revenue growth: above or below 20% year over year
- Free cash flow coverage of the $6.92 annual dividend
Bottom Line
If Skyrizi and Rinvoq hold their 20%-plus trajectory and full-year guidance stays firm, the $216 million acquired IPR&D charge is noise. The dividend is not in danger from operations; it is in danger only if AbbVie keeps spending aggressively on acquisitions that fail to generate returns faster than the payout compounds. Watch the guidance, not the charge. One tells you where the business is going. The other just tells you AbbVie closed another deal.
