(Reuters) -Supermarket chain Kroger Co said on Friday it will buy smaller rival Albertsons Companies Inc in a $24.6 billion transaction, in one of the biggest deals in the U.S. retail landscape in recent years.

The merger would create a supermarket titan with expected annual sales of around $210 billion.
