“We have a great new Brexit deal,” UK Prime Minster Boris Johnson tweeted on Friday.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker even tweeted, “Where there is a will, there is a deal – we have one! It’s a fair and balanced agreement for the EU and the UK and it is testament to our commitment to find solutions. I recommend that EUCO endorses the deal.”
While both cheered progress, the British Parliament just delayed a vote by three months.
In fact, while the House of Commons was due to have a “meaningful vote” on the new deal, it was blocked by Members of Parliament, who pushed an amendment that passed by 322 votes to 306, according to CNBC.
That amendment, introduced by former Conservative lawmaker Oliver Letwin, will not allow for the approval of the Brexit agreement with the European Union until legislation is in place.
This now triggers the “Benn Act,” which will force the UK Prime Minister to request an extension to January 31, 2020.
However, according to the Minister, as quoted by CNBC, “I will not negotiate a delay with the EU and neither does the law compel me to do so. Next week, the government will introduce the legislation needed for us to leave the EU with our new deal on Oct. 31 and I hope that our European colleagues and friends will not be attracted, as the opposite benches are, or should I say the front bench opposite, by delay.”
In addition, the British government says it will leave the EU, despite requests for a delay. Senior Cabinet minister Michael Gove, the UK’s Brexit planning chief said, “We are going to leave on October 31. We have the means and the ability to do so,” as quoted by AFP.
Things have become so chaotic that Boris Johnson could even be held in contempt of court.
All after he urged EU leaders to ignore a letter asking for an extension to the deadline. Judges are expected to hear allegation the Prime Minster broke a promise to the court that he would not attempt to “sabotage the request for an extension,” as noted by The Guardian.
At this time, it’s all a wait and see. Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
